Daily Schedule | subject to change

Morning Meditation

Morning Meditation

Our program schedule runs six days a week with your Sundays off to do as you wish!

6:00 - 8:30am Yoga Practicum.

During these morning sessions, we work in silence. No phones, reading, or writing prior to arriving to the Shala. When the session begins we start with meditation, move to pranayama, mudras and then physical practice. The morning practices are rooted in Hatha. There is no music but simply the sound of the forest and lagoon.

9:00 - 10:00am Breakfast.

All of the meals are provided by Apoyo Lodge and their offerings are nutrient dense, vegan based. We do take into consideration all dietary needs. This time is still spent in silence to allow you to absorb both the practice and the food mindfully.

10:00 - 12:00pm Focused curriculum and Lecture.

We move through the manual methodically. These lectures will be about everything from yoga theory, lifestyle, ethics and Ayurveda. There is a lot to cover and at this point talking and discussion amongst everyone is open.

12:00 - 1:30pm Lunch + break.

This again will be a time for delicious food and conversation with your fellow trainees, myself and my co-instructors. You can spend the time how you wish, communicating online, reading, sitting, playing in the lagoon or napping.

1:30 - 4:00pm Focused Curriculum and Practical.

We spend the afternoons breaking down postures, learning names (English + Sanskrit), adjustments, sequencing and more. There will also be days where we focus this time strictly on anatomy. There will be days that we do a fun vinyasa class! It’s all laid out and structured based on progression of the group and needs of the group.

4:00 - 4:45pm Afternoon Snack + break.

Enough said! Just kidding, unlimited coffee, tea and filtered water are available throughout your stay but expect a scrumptious snack each afternoon. It’s the perfect pick me up to finish off the rest of your days schedule prior to dinner.

4:45 - 6:00pm Yoga Practicum.

We close each evening with deepening our practice of philosophical study + meditation. The lectures here move along with the course touching on points such as the “whys and how’s” of not only practicing but also teaching meditation.

6:15pm Dinner.

Yummy food, tired bodies, minds, but surrounded with community and joy. Spend time surrounded by your crew decompressing and enjoying delightful + fresh cuisine to nourish your well worked body!

7:15-9:45. Free Time!

Your evenings are free to do as you wish. Many choose to spend time studying and absorbing. Others enjoy getting to know their fellow trainees more, communicating online, reading, sitting, playing in the lagoon or taking in the gorgeous sunset.

10:00pm Lights Out.

Getting to bed early is a must! Your body + mind will be working hard during the days, so restful sleep is imperative to investing in a truly holistic retreat.

There are many awesome things to relish in during your down time and days off including but not limited to: swimming and SUP in the lagoon, beautiful nature hikes, massage, or down time to rest and relax! Day trips and excursions will be available to join. These are set up in advance should you choose to want to get out and see more of what Nicaragua has to offer.

Week One

The first days of the training are focused on setting the foundation of all that is to come. We allow you time to settle into your daily routine. We spend a great amount of time introducing you to the structure of the YTT manual, going over the schedule, practice outlines, expectations and break down the basic set up for each day. In doing this, it is our goal that you feel comfortable and prepared for the incredible journey you will be experiencing over the entirety of the course.

During your first week you will:

  • Understand your daily routine and get accustomed to the intensive program.

  • Introduce you to our style of meditation, breath-work (pranayama) and mudras.

  • We will begin to unfold the history and philosophy behind this ancient practice, providing in-depth detail and understanding, while making sure you’re digesting the information as we go. The progression of learning is on a time line, but that is dependent on the groups progress.

  • We will discuss the various types and styles of yoga and explain the foundational points behind each one along with providing a brief history of where they emerged and the benefits of each practice.

  • We will begin our journey into understanding Sanskrit.

  • Both Sun Salutations A + B will be broken down posture by posture. You will learn the fine points of each and every pose, including modifications, adjustments and verbal cueing.

  • By the end of the week you will have a solid understanding of how to teach the Sun Salutations + be doing so! Yoga Alliance requires that each trainee spend 5 hours as a ‘lead teacher’ and we make haste with this process.

  • On the final day of the weeks training, you will be provided a quiz to help support your learning, and allow our team to know how the information is being processed. These quizzes are NOT pass or fail. They need be looked at as a way to review all that you are learning.

Week Two

During your second week, you will be well accustomed to the daily routine and feel confident heading into every day. We move further into our explanation and understanding of yoga lifestyle and ethics - and how it applies to being a great teacher. We will also begin to work on yoga methodology + sequencing, providing you a strong understanding of how to effectively design your classes.

During your second week you will:

  • Understand the lineage of yoga you are studying.

  • Gain understanding of what it means to practice meditation (as this is something we do during every day of our program.

  • We will delve deeper into yoga philosophy, lifestyle and ethics providing you a strong framework of understanding what it really means to embody a yogic world view, and how you can excel as a teacher by choosing to incorporate these learnings into your life and your practice as an instructor.

  • We will spend ample time covering postures (asanas), modifications and adjustments. Anatomy will be provided throughout this postural section; but we will also spend time specifically teaching you yoga anatomy and training YOUR body to ensure the safety on your own practice and the practice of your students.

  • We will cover how you can sequence your classes with intelligence. This component of our course holds incredible value and will support you in understanding how to be a great yoga instructor, and not just another yoga teacher.

  • By the end of the week you will have a solid understanding of how to build your classes and start guided practices with your fellow trainees in a group setting.

  • On the final day of the weeks training, you will be provided a quiz to help support your learning, and allow our team to know how the information is being processed. This will include information from both week one and week two.

Week Three

IMG_1657 2.JPG

The final week is all about closing any gaps in understanding, refining what you have learned, solidifying your confidence, and preparing you to head off back into the world. A retreat intensive quickly becomes a bubble of learning, safety, community and freedom. These are all qualities that we want you to carry forward with you as you head back home (or to the next place in your travels) - and we make sure that you know exactly what your next steps are and also prepare you for entering the world with a sense of compassion and joy.

During your final week you will:

  • Have a solidified understanding of what yoga is.

  • Refine and cement your understanding of leading and teaching classes.

  • We will playfully test your knowledge and grow the dynamic connection of the group as we embrace the last days of time we have together. This includes exercises in leadership, communication and play.

  • We will finish out our postural overview and provide you ample time to practice your understanding. This is includes Sanskrit, anatomy, alignment, cueing, sequencing, the chakra and nadi systems, music and of course lots of shared practice around it all.

  • We will cover the business of yoga giving you a strong foot hold on where your next steps are into advancing as a teacher. This includes explaining your yoga alliance registration process, how to grab your first yoga interviews (and the many styles of interviews that are out there!), land your jobs and then fill your classes. *Note: Even if you do not plan on teaching, all of this information will prove helpful as you continue on your yogic journey. You will know exactly what to look for in a class, an instructor or even a future training.

  • You will lead your final class and be graded on a pass or fail scale. If for any reason you do not pass (which is HIGHLY unlikely), you will be provided options to continue your studies.

  • You will take your final exam that will cover all the information taken in throughout the three weeks of training. If for any reason you do not pass (which is HIGHLY unlikely), you will be provided time to re-take the test prior to graduation ceremony.

  • On the final day the training, it’s all about fun and celebration! By this point you and your new community family will be elated, relieved, excited, a little nostalgic and tired. So we make certain that you have time to work through all of that before we enjoy our closing graduation ceremony.

EXPLORING NICARAGUA

Nicaragua is the largest of the Central American nations, yet it is also the most sparsely populated. Although Costa Rica, its neighbor to the south, has long been a bustling tourist destination, Nicaragua has only recently come into its own. Travel to Nicaragua for your Yoga Alliance Certified 200 Hour Training if you’re looking for a rainforest adventures, lakes, volcano exploration, surfing, diving or simply to enjoy the road less traveled—and less pricey.

Nicaragua has the largest area of primary-growth rainforest north of the Amazon, six active volcanoes and 550 miles of coastline dotted with sandy beaches and sleepy surf towns. There are few ancient ruins left in Nicaragua, but picturesque colonial towns--like Granada and Leon--make up for it with their pastel-painted churches and vibrant local festivals.

The Pacific side of the country is more popular with visitors, since the roads are more navigable and tourist hot spots like Lake Nicaragua, Grenada and San Juan del Sur are clustered along the coastline. The Mosquito Coast is the nickname for the Caribbean side of the isthmus, so-called for the indigenous tribe native to the area and not the pesky bug—although there are plenty of those. The beach town of Bluefields is the gateway to the charming Corn Islands and Pearl Keys, full of luscious creole cuisine, crystal blue lagoons and stunning white sand beaches.

ten things to know about this amazing country

Nicaragua is a fascinating country, and a firm favorite on the backpacker circuit through Central America. Here are 10 things you should know before you go.

There are volcanoes everywhere

As with other Central American nations, the Ring of Fire runs through Nicaragua. Down the Pacific side of the country, you can see volcanoes everywhere you go. From the active volcano at Masaya to the crater lake at Apoyo, there are lots of opportunities for visitors to appreciate these natural wonders.

Security is generally not a problem

While neighboring countries have a big problem with crime and there are frequent travel warnings, Nicaragua is relatively safe. Crime rates are lower, and if you take normal precautions, you should be fine.

Don’t miss the street food

Main meals in Nicaragua can get a bit monotonous, with black beans, rice, and fried plantains an almost constant feature, so you should make sure to try as much street food as possible. There are loads of different snacks at bargain prices, and you’ll get to spend time with the locals, too.

Certain parts of the country are inaccessible except by plane

If you’re planning on visiting the Corn Islands or other parts of the Caribbean coast, be aware that the area is only really accessible by plane. While it’s not too expensive to get there, the extra cost can be too much for many budget travelers.

It’s an affordable destination

Central America is known as a generally affordable place to spend time, and Nicaragua is the cheapest country in the region. The cost of living is very low, and if you eat street food you can get by on $20 per day.

The Caribbean coast is an isolated paradise

If you manage to get over to Bluefields and the Corn Islands, you’ll find an unspoilt paradise waiting to be discovered. With interesting history and amazing nature, it’s worth the flight from Managua.

It’s great for surfing

Stick to the Pacific coast and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to surfing beaches. There are top spots all down the coast, and several great ones near the party town of San Juan del Sur.

It’s a good spot to learn Spanish

Those on longer trips through Latin America would do well to learn some basic Spanish, and Nicaragua is a great place to do so. The city of Granada, in particular, offers a good selection of schools and cheap accommodation, which means you can learn without breaking the bank. Take a look at our rundown of some common Nicaraguan words and phrases, too.

Learn the history

No one is expecting visitors to complete a degree in Nicaraguan studies before they arrive, but having a basic grasp of the history of the country will make your trip much more enjoyable. If you understand why there is revolutionary street art everywhere, or constant references to Sandino, you’ll get more out of your time here.

Take the chicken bus (seriously)

There is no need to get shuttles or taxis around Nicaragua. Public transport is safe and affordable, and you’ll learn more about the local culture when you’re sharing a seat with two locals and all the produce they’ve bought at the market that day.

THINGS NOT TO MISS IN

  • Take a volcanic trek + go volcano-boarding on the black sand of Cerro Negro

  • Go snorkeling off the Corn Islands and Pearl Keys

  • Ride a horse on the beach

  • Take a ferry ride from Granada on Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe Island and Las Isletas two of the 360 islets in Lake Nicaragua

getting to nicaragua

Managua receives direct flights from major US hubs Atlanta, Miami and Houston through Spirit Airlines, Continental, American Airlines and Delta. You can enter Nicaragua by land from Honduras and Costa Rica.

Once you book your airline ticket, be sure to send us your itinerary. We offer free airport shuttle to and from Managua directly to the Lodge. If you need help finding a great flight, don’t hesitate to ask us for our tips and tricks.

Is nicaragua safe?

While Nicaragua has less tourism hype than neighboring Central American countries Costa Rica and Honduras, what you may not know is the crime rates are lower! Nicaragua is a safe Central American destination despite its somewhat recent (but quickly declining) political unrest. So is Nicaragua safe to visit in 2020? Yes, so long as you don’t get involved in politics and keep your wits about you.
